Chief Executive Officer

Melanie Fisk

melanie fiskMelanie holds MSW and MBA degrees from the University of Houston and brings her driving belief in education as the way to a more just and equal society to her daily work. She also brings an extensive community development and human service background to the agency through her activities with organizations such as DePelchin Children's Center, Nobel Women's Initiative, PeaceJam of Greater Houston, TEFL International, TeenLine and People Against Rape. Melanie served as the CEO of Literacy Advance from 2011 to 2014, then moved to a specially created role of Vice President of Client Services at SEARCH Homeless Services. She returned to Literacy Advance in 2016.

 

Kathryn BauchelleProgram Director

Kathryn Bauchelle

Kathryn has a background in education and languages, with degrees in language acquisition, literature, and education from the University of Sydney, Australia. She worked as a teacher of foreign languages and English literature in high schools in Australia and the UK, and served as a Head of Faculty for Modern Languages for six years. Her work with the Jubilee Debt Campaign, a London-based NGO, fueled her interest in social justice and community work, leading her to volunteer as an ESL tutor with Literacy Advance following her move to the United States in 2008. She joined the staff in 2009 as the Volunteer Manager, serving in this role for almost two years before becoming Program Director in 2011.

 

Maxine StefanoVolunteer Manager

Maxine Stefano

In her role as Volunteer Manager, Maxine pairs over 20 years of customer service, events marketing, and training experience in the financial services and travel industries with her passion for literacy. Since beginning in 2011, Maxine was a Literacy Advance volunteer in just about every capacity. She has tutored ABE and ESL classes at our Wilcrest location and partner sites, piloted new classes, led New Tutor Trainings and enrichment workshops, and represented Literacy Advance at various fundraisers and community events. In 2014, Maxine was honored with Volunteer Houston’s Award for Education. Maxine earned an English Linguistics degree from the University of Houston and is an active member of TESOL International Association. She joined the staff in March 2015.

 

Diana DelgadoTransition Coach

Diana Delgado

Diana holds a Bachelor's Degree in Education, and has experience working with high school students in the areas of language, geography, and psychology in her home country of Venezuela. Her experience as an ESL instructor for Even Start in 2005 led to her being hired as a Student Coordinator at Literacy Advance in 2007. One of the longest-serving members of the Literacy Advance staff, Diana served as both Student Coordinator and Wilcrest Program Manager, before moving to the newly created Transition Coach role in 2013. In this role, she focuses on connecting students to other services and training, particularly to work-related opportunities.
