Adult Basic Education (ABE)

Adult basic Education

ABE classes are for students who are native English speakers and who need to learn or improve their basic reading and writing skills. ABE classes are taught one-to-one, i.e., one student per tutor.

We accept students at any literacy level, unless they prove to be too advanced for the basic nature of our program. Classes are structured around a curriculum, but tutors are also encouraged to supplement with materials of particular interest to their student.

Throughout their time with us, ABE students are encouraged to access other services, such as our Transition Services, the United Way THRIVE program, services from other agencies, or appropriate supplemental classes offered at Literacy Advance.

When a student is ready, we will work with them on transition - often to GED classes or further student with another program.
