Family Literacy

Parents play a key role as their children’s first and best teachers, and help children develop the skills, attitudes, and habits for achieving school success.

Literacy Advance supports this through Family Literacy events, as well as specialized Parent ESL classes.

At Family Literacy events, parents hear a presentation (in either English or Spanish) about the importance of literacy for children, with practical hints and tips for incorporating reading and literacy into the home.

Meanwhile, children hear stories read aloud and do activities together before choosing a free book, to start or add to their home library.

Up until the end of 2017, Family Literacy events were held in a variety of locations, including schools and community centers, in addition to Literacy Advance sites. Starting in 2018, Family Literacy events are held only at Literacy Advance locations.
