Champions on the Greens
Larry Dierker, retired Astros pitcher, former manager and broadcaster, and Champions of Literacy recipient joined with fellow Champions of Literacy Dayna Steele and husband Charles Justiz to celebrate the 5th Annual Larry Dierker "My Team" Celebrity Golf Tournament. Steele, author, entrepreneur and social media maven topped the leaderboard at the live auction.
The clubhouse rocked with energy as golfers, celebrities, and guests finished a meal donated by Outback Steakhouse and they "steeled" themselves for the live auction. "I promise I will get your money!" boasted Steele. Steele was true to her word as she bantered, cajoled, and pushed each bid higher. Dayna's team played with Bubba Gilliam of Blazing Saddles campfire fame. "It was required viewing for my kids," teased Steele.
"I always call the guys who like to golf and have a good time with their teams," stated Dierker. Some of the "My Team" celebrities included fellow former Astros managers Art Howe and Phil Garner, as well as former Astros Shane Reynolds, Kevin Bass, and Bill Dawley. Astros broadcasting colleagues Bill Brown and Jim Deshaies played. JD had a good day; he won the closest to the hole contest. The celebrity player list also included former NFL players Mark Dennard, Dave Elmendorf, Gerald McNeil, Dan Pastorini, and Hall of Famer Kenny Houston.
Dierker is a dedicated volunteer tutor, having donated more than 600 hours of tutoring at Literacy Advance. As for her support for adult literacy, Dayna relayed a story from her book Rock to the Top: What I Learned About Success from the World's Greatest Rock Stars. "I asked Gene Simmons of KISS what he attributed his tremendous financial and marketing success to . . . he told me one word - read. People are not capable of expanding their world without being able to read." The foreword of Steele's first book was written by Simmons.
White Oak Gives Back returned as Hall of Fame sponsor. Black Elk Energy and Anheuser Busch were Beverage Sponsors. Consolidated Cable and Intec Communications were Hole in One sponsor. T-Box sponsors included Advanced Cable Technologies/Comcast and Valiant Exploration.
