Literacy Advance was honored to recognize famed Houston Astros pitcher, manager, commentator, and author of This Ain't Brain Surgery: How to Win the Pennant without Losing Your Mind, Larry Dierker as the eighth Champions of Literacy recipient at a reception at Minute Maid Park. Drayton McLane, CEO of the Houston Astros Baseball Club, served as the Honorary Chair and Giff Nielsen served as Master of Ceremonies.
Guests participated in a silent auction featuring the favorite books of local
and national celebrities incorporated into packages. Adult Basic Education (ABE) Learner Erica Baldwin shared her testimony of struggling to read and write despite her high school diploma and how her experience at Literacy Advance has made a tremendous impact on her life.
Several days before the event, Lyondell Chemical Company hosted a community awareness event featuring Mr. Dierker at San Jacinto College North. The event was intended to raise awareness of the plight of many adults who struggle to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
"By teaching the parent to read, the children increase their opportunity to share in the wonderful world of educational enlightenment,"
